Second Story Liquor Bar is a relative newcomer to Downtown Scottsdale that is hidden in plain sight, situated atop Gelato Spot on the corner of Scottsdale Road and 3rd Ave. It bills itself as a “world-class restaurant driven by passion and storytelling”, and I have to agree.
I went for dinner with a friend and we started by experiencing a couple of the bartender’s creations. Since this is Second Story Liquor Bar, the bartender is extremely important! John Christie has been making cocktails for over 20 years. He is a whiskey gentleman’s bartender, but has a softer side that shows cocktails in a delicate and balanced manner, and he uses fresh ingredients and fine spirits. We tried his Gin Fizz, a classic made with Hendricks gin, orange flower water, fresh lemon juice and house simple syrup; along with The Bee’s Knees, made with Spring 44 Old Tom Gin, lemon juice, honey syrup, bee pollen, and chamomile liqueur. Their drink menu is diverse and offers cocktails influenced by a range of eras.
We had the Mushroom Flatbread with shiitake and oyster mushrooms, fontina cheese, caramelized onions, truffle oil, and balsamic reduction; Rhode Island Calamari with pickled poblanos, carrots, cauliflower, and smoked tomato dipping sauce; and Poutine with smoked potatoes, balsamic onion aioli, braised greens pork, charred cherry tomatoes, mozzarella curd, and fresh basil. It was hard to pick a favorite!
The food and drink menu completely changes every six weeks. Each menu is debuted at a sneak preview night the Tuesday before launch. This is a special event for true food and cocktail enthusiasts, and is limited to just 14 guests for a truly intimate experience.
